By Dan Anderson While it may not be mandated or demanded, as Mark claims, it is called COURTESY.

by anon-f611 What about being courteous to our Maker and just going by your birth gender pronoun and accepting yourself as how the Potter made the beautiful Pot ? It's an insult to the Genius One who new how to make a beautiful creation of male OR female for a great purpose..It's self hate to reject one's gender one is born with and all the things that go along with being MALE or FEMALE.
Picture?type=square
By Dan Anderson anon - What creator are you talking about? A deity?

If the potter miswired his pot, what is wrong with accommodating such an error? If you doubt that your "creator" makes mistakes, then how do you address hermaphrodites?
Picture?type=square
By Daria Christine The language and terminology of sex and gender are in flux and rapidly evolving; it can be hard to stay abreast of the changes if you're not engaged with the community.

Sex and gender, while related, are different.

"Hermaphrodite" is an outdated term that specifically refers to a medical condition we now call "Intersex". (The "I" in LGBTQIA)

"Anonymous-f611" is obviously a gutless coward who fears to take credit or blame for their "opinions", but they raise the very reason why the religious are terrified of Transfolk.

We're an existential threat to the very foundation of Christian faith. "Male and Female he created them".

There's reasons why priests wear frocks.

By flipping the script, and asserting that Eve (Adam's SECOND wife) was created out of the body of Adam, the life giving creative power of the feminine is usurped and added to the destructive powers we attribute to masculinity and by which patriarchy is imposed. Never mind the implications of mating with a person born of your own body; the mythology of ritual cannibalism is creepy enough.

Picture?type=square
By Mark Tracey That applies only if you view hermaphrodites as mistakes.
Picture?type=square
By Dan Anderson Why would it not also apply to those whose hormonal compositions do not agree with their physical being? Why would you not accept being polite to transgender people as well?
Picture?type=square
By Vincent D'Emidio Mr. Anderson makes a valid point. No matter if the condition of the individual is emotional or physical...the situation exists, and by trying to deny it, they are denying themselves of the truth!

Another thing...what about the concept of respect? Are they to be denied a person's respect simply because that person's vision of how things should be are in contrast with the reality at hand? Suppose the situation were reversed...I'm quite sure that straight, conservative men wouldn't wanna be disrespected.
Picture?type=square
By Dan Anderson Vincent - Well stated. Thank you!
Picture?type=square
By Mark Tracey First, the default pronoun I would use would be based on the individuals outward appearance, with only that limited knowledge there can no disrespect by using a pronoun other then that wished by the person in question. Secondly, mandating by force of law, as the Canadian human rights law requires, violates the right to free speech by legally compelling speech. That is disrespecting the human right of free speech while claiming to serve the rights of others to be respected. There is no right to be respected for opinions, views, ideas or (legal ) actions. Respect is earned by each individual, not artificially forced by law. To your point Vincent, straight white, conservative men are openly and freely disrespected in the US all the time. You would not want a law that forced respect of that group, or say Christians, would you?

By Dan Anderson Mark - Is this another "humor" post?
Picture?type=square
By William Dykeman it isnt funny if you have to ask
Picture?type=square
By Dan Anderson William - I had to ask because one of the last times he wrote something, I challenged him on it. He THEN said it "was a joke". Reminds me of Adam Henry, the Tangerine Man.
Picture?type=square
By Mark Tracey What do you find objectionable in that post?
Picture?type=square
By Mark Tracey You know better,
Picture?type=square
By Vincent D'Emidio Most people who call themselves "conservative" or "christian" are really just a bunch of malcontents! They hide behind religion in order to give "legitimacy" to their hatred of others. When some "Joe Six-pack" runs his mouth that his, ah, "religious" beliefs "prevent" him from respecting Gay folks, he is doing just that...RUNNING HIS BIG, STUPID MOUTH! A bully always needs someone to pick on so they can flaunt their "Manhood". The concept of respect is ALIEN to them.
Picture?type=square
By Vincent D'Emidio I agree that the pronoun you would use WOULD be "based on the individuals outward appearance" -- that would be the normal thing to do. I agree, some people, disgruntled as they may be, may try to force the issue. But, when they attack smaller things like "ethnic jokes", etc., then they may be crossing the line between demanding respect, or just being a pain in the ass!

On the other hand, it depends on just who is making the joke. For example, the 1970s Rock group, Black Sabbath, made a song on their Paranoid album called "Fairies Wear Boots". It is entirely possible that some disgruntled Gay man might object to the song. The truth, however, is that most Gay folks didn't get upset about it...they probably got a kick out of it! That's because the song was sung by Black Sabbath, and most musicians of the late 60s, and early 70s were very liberated in their outlook, and most Gay folks know this.

Now, if Pat Buchanan sang that song, it would be different, and would deserve an angry response. black Sabbath may or may not be prejudiced...but Pat Buchanan DEFINITELY IS! When Buchanan speaks about Gay people, or any other Minority, he ISN'T joking, he is dead serious...and Gay folks know this!
Picture?type=square
By Mark Tracey Laws cannot be subjective, that creates a double standard. The right to free speech , even humor, is a higher right then the right to not be offended.
Picture?type=square
By Kirby Liberty Harris Vince, the song fares where boots was about non-racist skinheads that attacked sabbath after a show, not about gays..
Picture?type=square
By Vincent D'Emidio Perhaps the song wasn't about Gay folks, but it can and WILL be interpreted as such. Besides which, you missed my whole point...Liberated dudes like me are tolerated FAR more than ANIMALS like Trump. That's because people know that I'm REALLY just joking, while guys like Pat Buchanan CANNOT get away with it because people KNOW that he REALLY means it!

You got it now?
Picture?type=square
By Kirby Liberty Harris You assume to much. I got your point from the beginning and agree. I was just stating facts. Though, the band has two stories of the origin one was non-racist skinheads attacking them and the other was they were high ad though they saw literal faeries wearing boots.
Picture?type=square
By Vincent D'Emidio "they were high ad though they saw literal faeries wearing boots"

That version is the one which I was thinking of, because I know that Black Sabbath was definitely a bunch of "heads", just by looking at them. Besides which, in those halcyon days anybody who DIDN'T get high were considered to be weird, or at least, "abnormal".

It makes me wonder why some Baby-Boomers BETRAYED the cause by listening and BELIEVING the Republicans in the 1980s! It's as though they forgot EVERYTHING they learned in the 1960s...that racism is evil, that organized religion was nonsense, that Marijuana was, and IS, harmless! How could they get so brainwashed?
Picture?type=square
By William Dykeman drugs do a lot of damage a glass of wine may relax you a bottle may give you a hangover drink the whole vat dry and you may well die
Picture?type=square
By Vincent D'Emidio As John McLaughlin, of the McLaughlin Group, would say, "Wrong"!!! Marijuana is PROVEN to be HARMLESS, and that is it. Period.

We had a real Revolution back in those WONDERFUL days...we were right, and we WON!!! The bible-bangers (FILTH), racists (more FILTH) and Capitalist animals (pure FILTH) were unhappy, so they got together and STOLE the 1980 election, and that's a PROVEN fact. now, how could MY Generatiopn FALL for those Republican LIES? They didn't fool me, not for one second!
Picture?type=square
By Mark Tracey I have no problem treating anyone with courtesy and respect, but until I know what pronoun that person prefers to be used, my choice will be based on that persons outward appearance.
Legal requirements to force the proper pronoun usage under penalty of law is not acceptable under any circumstances.
Picture?type=square
By Vincent D'Emidio I understand your point...your first choice would be to use terms that are familiar to you.
Picture?type=square
By William Dykeman i agree with amrk maybe i'm pld and i dont advocate any harm or ridicule to trans folks but this made up crap is too much there are two genders and then there are mixed up people who need love and undrestanding, but this ? this is like gving herin to a junkie and caling it a fix.. you make people better by pandering to a disease
Picture?type=square
By Mark Tracey Thank you, but not just that, use terms that reflect the general appearance and demeanor of the person being addressed. If the person looks like an NFL linemen, you don’t address them as Ms.
Picture?type=square
By Dan Anderson Unless they ASK you to do so. Then, why wouldn't you, out of courtesy, let alone a touch of empathy?
Picture?type=square
By Mark Tracey Of course if asked, but not if legally mandated.
Picture?type=square
By Kirby Liberty Harris I will call a person any name they want, but if a dude wants to be called ms, then no way in hell.
Picture?type=square
By Dan Anderson So you are not so tolerant and empathetic as you claim.

Thank you for showing your true colors.
Picture?type=square
By Mark Tracey I’m sure there are names that you would not want to be called or would not be willing accept, yet free speech allows it.
Picture?type=square
By Kirby Liberty Harris Dan, I am 100% tolerant and empathetic. I am all for people choosing to believe they are whatever they want. Their life. You can identify as a turnip if you want. I will treat them with kindness, decency, not attack them and defend them when someone treats them bad.
Picture?type=square
By Kirby Liberty Harris But I will not indulge them in their fantasy. I will be kind to you, but IF you are a man, then I will not call you a woman because you demand it. Again, if Bob decides he wants to be called Sally, I will call him Sally, but I won't call him a she when he is not.
Picture?type=square
By Kirby Liberty Harris And I will not use the made up pronouns Ze, zir, zem. Foolish. And nice trying to play the not a nice guy BS, Dan. It is purely based on reality, logic and science.
Picture?type=square
By William Dykeman i'm just going to call them cousin it them f this politically correct insanity
